Netflix's acclaimed series 'Beef' returns for a second season, transforming from a limited series into an anthology akin to 'True Detective'. Created by Lee Sung Jin, the new season features a fresh cast and storyline, moving away from the road rage feud of the first season.
The narrative centres on wealthy couple Josh (Oscar Isaac) and Lindsay (Carey Mulligan), whose volatile relationship is captured on video by Austin (Charles Melton) and his fiancée Ashley (Cailee Spaeny). The footage prompts a desperate attempt by Josh and Lindsay to suppress the evidence, revealing their middle-class privilege and desperation.
The season weaves a complex tale of marriage, murder, cover-ups, and corruption, building with pressure-cooker intensity. While some moments, such as Ashley throwing herself from a moving car, feel overdone, the drama remains compelling throughout.
Performances are a highlight, with Mulligan delivering a juicy role as a disenchanted woman fuelled by anger. Isaac also shines, notably playing keyboards to a cover of Hot Chip's 'Over and Over'. Melton continues to demonstrate his maturity as an actor, while Youn Yuh-jung is imperious as Chairwoman Park, and Song Kang-ho appears as her husband.
Despite some unnecessary pop culture references, the season offers a compelling look at ambition and avarice, with memorable scenes that leave viewers wanting more. 'Beef' season two serves up another deliciously savage drama.
