Prince William's decision to play polo while Prince Harry met with King Charles was a deliberate act that confirms there is no chance of reconciliation between the brothers, according to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams.
Deliberate Optics
Fitzwilliams told GB News that William's participation in the DMMI Royal Charity Polo Cup at Windsor on July 10, the same day Harry reunited with the King at Highgrove, sent a clear message. "The optics were deliberate," he said. "William feels betrayed because of Spare and the other interviews. Catherine was openly supporting William. So that's his view and it made it clear because polo at that time... It's obvious. They haven't spoken for years."
Strained Relations
William and Harry have been estranged for several years. Tensions initially arose over William's concerns about the speed of Harry's romance with Meghan Markle, and worsened after the Sussexes' bombshell revelations in their Oprah Winfrey interview, Harry's memoir Spare, and the Netflix series. The brothers have not spoken for years, and William's actions indicate he is not open to mending the rift.
Harry's Reunion with the King
Harry met with King Charles at Highgrove, the monarch's private residence in Gloucestershire, on July 10. The meeting was the first time the Duke of Sussex had seen his father in months. Meanwhile, William was joined by Catherine, Princess of Wales, at the polo event in Windsor. Fitzwilliams noted that Catherine's presence alongside William further underscored the couple's unified stance.
No Immediate Reconciliation
Fitzwilliams concluded that there is no prospect of William opening the door to Harry in the near future. The commentator's remarks highlight the deep divisions within the royal family, which show no signs of healing. The polo match, he argued, was a public demonstration of William's resolve to keep his distance.
