Saturday Night Live UK has mocked Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in a sketch that opened the live broadcast on Saturday night, just hours after it emerged that Harry and Meghan are to visit Nottingham this week.
Awkward reunion at Sandringham
In the sketch, Prince William [Freddie Meredith] and Princess Kate [Annabel Marlow] had been tricked into having an awkward reunion with Harry [Jack Shep] and Meghan [Ayoade Bamgboye] at the King's private estate, Sandringham. The meeting was arranged by their uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor [George Fouracres].
Harry has been estranged from his older brother in recent years after stepping down as a senior working royal in January 2020 before relocating to the United States.
Jokes about hair, Suits and Pizza Express
The sketch kicked off with Meghan looking around and telling Harry: "Look, this is where your grandpa [Prince Philip] asked if I was related to Beyonce." Harry then replied: "Classic. And over here, this is where he asked if I was related to him."
William and Catherine then approach the couple, with William making a dig at Harry's hair colour. "I told you not to call me that because you know I don't have a comeback," the Duke of Sussex said. "Oh, look, William, it's the woman from Suits," Catherine said. But, Harry was far from impressed, hitting back saying: "She's not on Suits anymore. She doesn't do anything anymore."
The couples were then joined in the sketch by the King, Queen and Andrew, who then asked the group: "Did somebody say Pizza Express Woking?" After Charles addressed his younger brother without using his former title, Andrew fired back: "That's Prince Andrew to you."
Charles's criticism and Andrew's response
"Enough is enough," Charles said, adding: "You're arrogant. You're entitled. You represent an outdated institution that has had centuries of war, tax evasion, and slavery, and that's all great, but you have also been accused of terrible things, and that's where I draw the line." Andrew, who was stripped of his royal titles last year, responded: "I swear, I never believed for one moment that my actions would have consequences."
Previous sketch and upcoming visit
During its season two return last month, Saturday Night Live UK also took aim at Harry and Meghan after they returned to live in the UK. The sketch, which was set at Balmoral, saw Charles poke fun at their status as non-working royals, joking that the castle was for "royals only."
While Harry and Meghan are no longer working members of the Royal Family, the Sussexes will make their first joint public appearance later this week. The Sussexes are expected to visit CRS Nottingham to take part in an acting workshop, before joining the women of the Grenfell Hubb Community Kitchen at a local food bank. They are also anticipated to meet with Epic Partners, an organisation that supports young people through sport.
