BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent hosted the show alone on Monday, June 22, after a format shake-up that saw co-host Jon Kay stationed outside Downing Street. The programme, typically presented by a duo, opened with Kay reporting live from Downing Street amid growing speculation that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer could announce his resignation.
Jon Kay Reports from Downing Street
Addressing viewers, Jon Kay said: "Good morning, welcome to Breakfast with me, Jon Kay, live on Downing Street this morning amid growing signs that the Prime Minister could be set to resign." He noted that "the widespread expectation within government and within the Labour Party is that we could hear Sir Keir Starmer setting out a timetable for his departure as early as this morning." Kay also highlighted that Starmer's political rival, Andy Burnham, was returning to Westminster after his convincing victory in the Makerfield by-election.
Kay continued: "Within the next few hours, things should become a little clearer about the future of the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer. On Friday, after Andy Burnham's win in the Makerfield by-election, he said he was going to be hanging on. He said he would fight any attempts to depose him. He would stand in any leadership challenge. And yet, over the weekend, the language, the mood, the whispers have changed somewhat, and even Sir Keir Starmer's closest allies are suggesting that maybe he will make a decision, setting out some sort of timetable about his plans in the next few hours."
Sally Nugent Presents Solo in Studio
When the cameras cut back to the BBC Breakfast studio, Sally Nugent was alone on the sofa, presenting the rest of the day's news. Several viewers commented on the format change on social media. One person asked on X: "Are they standing outside Downing Street for the whole programme as well?" Another posted: "Good grief, this is getting ridiculous. All we need now is live helicopter coverage of the train carrying Andy Burnham on its dramatic journey from Manchester to Euston."
BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One from 6am each morning.
