Nick Clegg has dismissed as 'nonsense' claims that he had a heated argument with the Queen over Brexit during a Buckingham Palace lunch. The former Deputy Prime Minister said he had no recollection of the alleged incident, which was reported to have involved the monarch expressing frustration with the direction of the European Union.
Buckingham Palace also denied the story, stating that the Queen remains politically neutral, as she has been throughout her 63-year reign. A palace spokesman added that they would never comment on 'spurious, anonymously sourced claims'.
The reports suggested the Queen had criticised the EU's direction, but Mr Clegg rubbished the notion, telling ITV: 'This is nonsense. I've no recollection of this happening, and it's not the sort of thing I would forget.'
The story emerges amid heightened Brexit debate, with the SNP indicating they would seek a second Scottish referendum if the UK votes to leave the EU. Earlier this year, Prince William's aides were forced to deny that a speech he gave about international cooperation was a veiled endorsement of EU membership.
