King Charles demonstrated his linguistic abilities during his inaugural visit to the Isle of Man as sovereign, humorously expressing his hope that he was not 'massacring' the Manx language. The monarch, who holds the title Lord of Mann, addressed a special sitting of Tynwald, the island's parliament, and later conversed in French with a native speaker among the crowds.
Manx Language and Parliamentary Address
During his address to Tynwald, one of the oldest continuous legislatures in the world, Charles acknowledged the significance of the year: 'I am aware that this year is Manx Language Year – Blein ny Gaelgey (Year of the Manx Language).' He lightened the atmosphere by adding, 'So I very much hope I have not succeeded at this point in massacring this wonderful celebration of your language…!' The remark drew laughter from the chamber.
The King's visit to the Isle of Man, a self-governing crown dependency, included a formal welcome at Tynwald. The island, famous for the Isle of Man TT motorcycle race, maintains its own government, civil service, judiciary, and tax system.
Historical Context and Royal Remarks
Charles highlighted the historical significance of the parliament, stating, 'As the world's oldest parliament in continuous operation, Tynwald holds a remarkable distinction. This longevity speaks not only to the strength of your institutions, but also of the enduring partnership between the Crown and the people of this Island.' He also noted that the first royal visit was by his great-great-great-grandfather, Prince Albert, in 1847.
Public Engagement and Tram Ride
After the parliamentary session, Charles met members of the public outside the building in Douglas, shaking hands and exchanging words. He spoke with Fabienne Favray, originally from France but a resident of the island for 12 years, switching from English to French when she spoke a few words in her native tongue.
During his day on the island, the King rode a horse-drawn tram along the Douglas promenade to celebrate 150 years of the Douglas Horse Tramway. He also attended a garden party, further engaging with the local community.
