The Princess of Wales made a triumphant and emotionally significant return to public life, attending the Royal Variety Performance for the first time since her cancer diagnosis. Kate Middleton, alongside Prince William, graced the red carpet at London's Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday, 19th November 2025, marking a highly anticipated moment for royal watchers.
A Dazzling and Symbolic Appearance
Kate captivated onlookers in a breathtaking, figure-hugging emerald green velvet gown. The floor-length dress featured a sophisticated fishtail hem and elegant off-the-shoulder sleeves. Her hair was styled in her signature loose curls, creating a look that was both glamorous and characteristically poised.
The most poignant detail of her ensemble was her choice of jewellery. The Princess wore the late Queen Elizabeth II's Cartier diamond drop earrings, a touching tribute to the former monarch. Known as the Greville chandelier earrings, these stunning pieces were crafted by Cartier over a period of more than a decade, from 1918 to 1929.
She completed the look with a matching jewel-encrusted clutch bag, a dazzling cuff bracelet, and a pair of elegant green court heels. Prince William complemented his wife perfectly, looking sharp in a black velvet dinner jacket, a white dress shirt, and a classic bow tie.
A Warm Welcome and Special Moments
Upon their arrival, the royal couple were greeted by representatives from ITV and the Royal Variety Charity. In a charming moment, nine-year-old twins Emelia and Olivia Edwards presented Kate with posies on behalf of the charity.
Despite the cold and sleety weather, which left Kate with goosebumps on her arms, she was all smiles. She expressed her joy at being back, telling guests, "It is so nice to be back for the performance." Fans braved the conditions to catch a glimpse of the couple, whose London home at Kensington Palace is just a short distance from the venue.
A particularly tender moment was captured on the red carpet as William gently guided his wife into the hall with a hand placed on the small of her back. This appearance comes during a significant week for the Princess, who also delivered her first speech since returning to work after her diagnosis just days before.
A Star-Studded Night of Entertainment
Inside the famous hall, William and Kate were treated to a spectacular show. The evening's performances included acts from the cast of Paddington The Musical, pop star Jessie J, and Grammy award-winning singer Laufey. This year marks the sixth time the couple have attended the prestigious event.
Comedian Jason Manford hosted the show, while music legends Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure introduced a special performance from the Live Aid musical, Just For One Day. Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe also performed an extract from Kinky Boots.
The grand finale was a major celebration, featuring 400 performers including Michael Ball, Matt Lucas, and Katy Secombe in a medley honouring the 40th anniversary of the legendary musical Les Misérables.
The Royal Variety Performance is now in its 113th year, having first been staged in 1912 for King George V and Queen Mary. While King Charles attended the previous year's event alone, this year William and Kate returned to their royal duties, delighting the public with their graceful and heartfelt presence.
