Vicky McClure has hinted at what's next for Trigger Point after facing several challenges while filming the latest series. Vicky returns as Met Police bomb disposal officer Lana Washington when the ITV drama series returns for its fourth season, with Shetland and This City Is Ours star Julie Graham joining the line-up.
Filming was 'no picnic' for Vicky McClure
In the latest series, Lana and her officers (known as EXPOs) "continue their quest to keep the capital safe from explosive devices and terrorist threats", the synopsis reads, with the adversaries a group of "professional mercenaries". With such a dramatic plot, it's safe to assume the show will be full of thrills and spills.
And it seems filming was no picnic for Vicky either, who admits that she was "knackered" from all the running around. She told Bella magazine: "I was knackered! There's a lot of running on Trigger Point, and I've made it quite clear that I don't go to the gym, but I do enjoy being active, and I just knuckle down as much as I can to make the stunts look realistic."
Action scenes and heatwaves on set
Vicky acknowledges that she feels "young-ish", but didn't expect to be involved in action programmes in her early 40s. She's "proud" that she is, though, saying she'd always "have a go" as she let slip there would be some "wild explosions".
Filming during the UK heatwaves brought challenges, too. "I try to make sure we have a happy set. I did make sure we had ice cream trucks every now and then, but it was a hot shoot. Weirdly, it kind of adds to the show... when you're filming big explosions and catastrophes in the heat of the London summer, it adds to that sense of pressure."
Future of the show and new cast members
As for the future of the show, Vicky says it's up to the fans. She says that if it were to return for a fifth series, they'd have to go "even bigger and better", as that's what viewers "deserve".
Meanwhile, Vicky shed light earlier this week on Julie's character, Commander Nia Quentin. As reported by Digital Spy, Vicky said Julie walks in and "commands the room", and Lana "quickly identifies" the character's strength. "Lana quickly identifies that, and feels that she's possibly in the safest hands she's been in, because the red tape that falls down in front of her just crushes any sort of decision that she wants to make. Sometimes she goes: 'I'm just gonna ignore that because people could die.' Whereas there is a very quick belief that Julie's character has faith in Lana. If you have faith in her, then she will react accordingly and that's what we pick up on quite quickly."
Also appearing in the latest series are Eric Shango and Nabil Elouahabi in the roles of bomb disposal officers Danny and Hass, Natalie Simpson as DS Helen Morgan, and Maanuv Thiara as DCI Batra. Catch Trigger Point on ITV tonight (Sunday, August 30) from 9pm to 10pm.
