Wright's Food in Carmarthenshire has been named the UK's second-best farm shop, beaten only by Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop in Oxfordshire. The ranking, compiled by countryside lifestyle experts at Welligogs, analysed Tripadvisor ratings, Google review scores and Instagram following to identify the UK's highest-scoring farm shops.
Higher Tripadvisor score than Diddly Squat
Wright's Food holds a 4.5 Tripadvisor score, a 4.7 Google score, and has 13,500 Instagram followers. In comparison, Diddly Squat has a 3.7 Tripadvisor score, a 4.4 Google score, and 2.8 million Instagram followers.
“Farm shops are such an important part of the British countryside experience because they give visitors the opportunity to experience a destination beyond its traditional tourist attractions,” says Tess Annan, manager at Welligogs. “Whether you're picking up locally produced food, stopping for lunch or simply browsing what a farm has to offer, visiting a farm shop can be a lovely way to slow down and experience the character of the surrounding countryside.”
What Wright's Food offers
Wright's Food was opened at the start of 2014 by experienced restaurateurs Simon and Maryann Wright, who transformed a historic 1831 Georgian pub (formerly a Brains pub). It showcases seasonal produce from local farmers, including meat, cheese, fruit, and vegetables, and stocks store cupboard favourites, including its own jams, chutneys and condiments, as well as tins, jars and dry goods from local makers.
The farm shop also has a cafe offering sandwiches, salads, soups, stews, and more. It is home to the 'best sandwich in Wales', the Cubano with pork belly, Hafod cheese, Myrddin Heritage ham, pickles, Sriracha, and mayo. The shop is located in Llanarthne and is open Thursday to Saturday from 12pm to 6pm, and on Sunday from 11am to 4pm.
“Diddly Squat is obviously one of the country's most recognisable farm shops, but what's particularly interesting about this ranking is that there are so many brilliant alternatives across the UK,” Annan added.
