Sonny Green, the bookmakers' favourite to win Britain's Got Talent, has revealed a heartwarming reason for including his two young sons in his semi-final performance. The spoken word poet, aged 30, explained that the only way to get his children into the Hammersmith Apollo was to make them part of his act, as age restrictions bar under-sevens from the audience.
Green, who received Simon Cowell's golden buzzer after his semi-final, told BBC Essex presenter Sonia Watson: 'The only way I could actually get them in to watch me was to include them as part of my performance. Then the boys could actually watch their dad perform at the Hammersmith Apollo, which was the biggest indoor event I've ever done.'
The Essex-born actor and musician has been given odds of 13/8 by William Hill to claim the £250,000 prize and a spot at the Royal Variety Performance. He is one of five golden buzzer recipients among the 10 finalists, alongside singer Matty Juniosa, dance group LMA, fire juggler Liqei Yang, and drone artists Celestial.
Green has spoken candidly about his past struggles with alcohol and drugs, and has maintained sobriety for seven years. He credits the birth of his son in 2018 and the death of his father Martin, who lost his life to addiction at 48, as wake-up calls to change his life. 'Becoming a father changed my life,' he said.
The Britain's Got Talent final airs on ITV1 on Saturday, May 30 at 7pm and on ITVX.
