Netflix's Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story still divides fans

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the latest season in Ryan Murphy's anthology series, continues to divide viewers weeks after its release, with some saying it left them unable to sleep while others criticise its historical accuracy.

Released on September 17, the eight-part series is the fourth instalment in the 'Monsters' anthology. It revisits the 1892 case of Andrew and Abby Borden, who were found bludgeoned to death with a hatchet in their home. Their daughter Lizzie became the prime suspect.

Mixed reactions from viewers

While unsettling scenes have kept some viewers awake at night, others have taken issue with the show. On Rotten Tomatoes, one person wrote: "Not worth watching but I bet you will still do so to judge for yourselves. I found it totally nonsensical, tedious and ridiculous."

Another commented: "I couldn't even get past the second episode; this is a terrible show", while a third added: "It's almost completely made up, not historically accurate at all. So over the top it's like a parody. Way too long and drawn out. The gore is emphasized for shock value."

However, some viewers have praised it on social media. One person said: "I'm currently watching 'Monster' the Lizzie Borden story on Netflix - so unhinged." Another replied: "Monster; Lizzie Borden Story. Damn what a show! So dark!"

Continued success on Netflix

Despite the controversy, the series remains a major success for the platform. It currently sits at number five in the UK top 10 series chart. According to Netflix's Tudum, between September 14 and September 20, it took the top spot in the global top 10 shows overview with 12.1 million views.

The following week, between September 21 and September 27, it saw 14.5 million views, maintaining its number one position. Between September 28 and October 4, it dropped to second place but still brought in 5.7 million views.

The series has also reached number one in 16 countries and made the top 10 in 89 countries. The official synopsis reads: "The Emmy-winning MONSTER anthology series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan will return for a fourth instalment in 2026 following the series' first female 'monster' Lizzie Borden." Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is available to stream on Netflix.
