Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has been praised by viewers for her 'genius' question to Suella Braverman.
Reform UK MP Suella Braverman, who previously served as Home Secretary under the Conservative government, appeared on the programme on Thursday, October 1. She discussed her new memoir, which explores her heritage and family history, including her ancestor's migration from India to Mauritius.
Braverman praises British empire
During the conversation, Braverman praised the British empire for what it gave her family, saying: “There’s a popular narrative that the British empire was evil and oppressive and that British history is something to be ashamed of, my experience, and that of my family’s is very different.
“The women were educated, the vote was granted, the island like Mauritius for example was dramatically transformed through industrialisation, innovation, engineering, infrastructure, and actually members of my own family benefitted hugely from the British empire.”
Viewers react to Kate's question
After her comment, Kate directly asked: “So you’re pro-migration?” Braverman laughed it off, insisting she was not, and claiming: “Not today. In 2026, in the 21st century, no, we have far too much immigration into this country,” reports WalesOnline.
Viewers were left applauding Kate's comment and reaction. One said: “Well done Kate for the quick quip.” Another called Kate “brilliant”, while someone else described her question as “genius”. Someone else said: “Dear Kate is on a rolling, first she showed up Zia Yusaf for a fool & now Suella, well done Kate you are my favourite.” [sic]
Previous interview with Zia Yusuf
The comment came after viewers admitted they “switched off” during an interview with Reform UK spokesperson Zia Yusuf last month, as he spoke to Kate and Ranvir Singh. The interview was branded a “car crash”, with Yusuf continually speaking over Kate and Ranvir as they tried to ask questions.
Kate said at one point: “You’ve got to allow us to talk about your statements otherwise it’s not a conversation, is it, and it will confuse everybody.” The interview was quickly brought to an end after Ranvir drew attention to a Tweet Yusuf had shared weeks ago, which was accused of being racist. As he failed to respond directly about the tweet, they shut down his response.
“Zia Yusuf, you had your chance to respond to the tweet but you chose to deflect by talking about another issue. Thank you so much for joining us on the programme,” Ranvir said. As he continued to speak over her, Ranvir ended the segment, saying: “I’m afraid we did run out of time on the interview there.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
