Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon has confirmed that Kit Green is the father of Bethany Platt's baby, ending fan speculation about a possible paternity twist. The actress, who plays Bethany, revealed the news after her character discovered she is pregnant in Tuesday's (October 13) episode of the ITV soap.
Fans were initially left confused about who the father might be, because Bethany had recently slept with Kit, her mother Sarah's ex-boyfriend, and had also been reuniting with her former fling, Ryan Connor.
One-night stand with Kit Green
Bethany's controversial one-night stand with Kit took place last month. It came after Sarah had dumped the detective to spare him as he faced losing his career for her, and she could spend the rest of her life behind bars for the murder of Theo Silverton. In the aftermath of the split, Kit was seen drinking more and pushing away those who care about him. But what they didn't know at the time was that, as well as losing Sarah, he had also been shaken by an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis.
It was during the time he was keeping his diagnosis a secret that Kit ended up sleeping with Bethany, before they later agreed it was a mistake that won't happen again, and have been trying to keep the secret hidden ever since.
Paternity twist ruled out
When suggested it's not going to end well, Lucy quipped: "No, it's not going to end well, because it's her mum's ex-boyfriend's baby!" confirming Kit as the father after some fans wondered if they'd be led to believe Kit or Bethany's new love interest, Ryan, could be the father.
Sharing her reaction to the twist, Lucy said: "My jaw was on the floor. I think it's so good that now they have got to face the consequences of what they've done and they can't just brush it under the carpet in the way that they wanted to. It's adding a whole other level of drama for the audience."
Impact on Bethany's relationship with Ryan
She also addressed Bethany's relationship with Ryan. "Her and Ryan are going quite well," she said. "I think she genuinely really likes him and he genuinely really likes her too. They've got a bit of shared history as well from when they were together before, but obviously, this is going to throw a massive spanner in the works. If she chooses to go through with the termination, that will make things easier for their relationship."
"But if she chooses to keep the baby, that's going to complicate the whole situation because is Ryan going to want to be with her if she's going to be having someone else's baby when they're so early on in their relationship."
