Vernon Kay Interrupts Radio 2 Broadcast for Emotional Tribute to Colleague

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay halted his Tuesday morning show to deliver a heartfelt tribute to his colleague, studio manager Ian Deeley, who died unexpectedly at the age of 45. The 51-year-old broadcaster finished playing a track before revealing the devastating news to his listeners, describing how the entire BBC family was shocked by the loss.

A Passionate Career in Broadcasting

Vernon Kay emphasised that while on-air presenters receive much of the public attention, it is the dedicated team behind the scenes that makes Radio 2 successful. He described Ian Deeley as someone who loved radio with "every fibre of his being" and had worked across most BBC radio stations during his career.

"Even though he was a relatively young chap, Ian had a long and illustrious career," Vernon explained. "His time at the BBC started with news shifts followed by production work and more recently, Ian was working with our colleagues on the outside broadcast team."

Memorable Contributions and Dedication

Vernon highlighted Ian's work with the outside broadcast team, which he jokingly referred to as "the Broadside Outcasts." Ian contributed to major events including pop festivals, BBC Proms, and numerous royal occasions. One particularly memorable project was the D-Day 80th anniversary celebrations from the beaches of Normandy.

"Ian was our lead engineer on our D-Day celebrations and he was so dedicated that he went on a reconnaissance trip to France in his own time," Vernon recalled. "He wanted to ensure everything met his incredibly high standards."

Personal Qualities and Legacy

The presenter shared that Ian considered working with Radio 2 and the late Steve Wright as career highlights. Steve Wright had described Ian as "one of the top operatives" and would tell him to "keep it cranked." Beyond his professional achievements, Ian was passionate about sailing and had been elected to lead his local sailing club.

Vernon described Ian as "an exuberant, larger than life character who was always enthusiastic and brought a smile to everyone's faces." He added that colleagues would miss Ian's quick wit and offered sincere condolences to his mother Di, brother Neal, and partner Lucy.

Later in the show, Vernon thanked listeners for sending messages of condolence, demonstrating the widespread impact of Ian's sudden passing on the broadcasting community and beyond.
