Stone Roses Bassist Mani Dies Aged 63: Tributes Pour In For Music Icon
Stone Roses' Mani dies at home aged 63

The British music scene is in mourning following the death of Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, the legendary bassist for The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, who has died at the age of 63.

Emergency Services Statement

North West Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to a property in Heaton Moor on Thursday morning, November 20, 2025. An ambulance service spokesperson stated that emergency crews attended a private address at 10.42am. It is understood this was Mani's home, and no patient was transported to hospital following the call. Neighbours reported seeing an ambulance outside the property. No cause of death has yet been given.

A Life in Music and Forthcoming Plans

The news comes as a particular shock as Mani had recently announced ambitious plans for a conversation tour. Just last Thursday, he revealed a 69-date schedule running from late 2026 into early 2027. The tour was titled: 'The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and Me - An Intimate Evening with Gary 'Mani' Mounfield'.

In a poignant Facebook post, the musician hinted this could be his final major undertaking, writing, "I think @mm embarking on what could be my final road trip….. Getting too old now…". He assured fans he would not be "slaggings off of bandmates" but would instead share his "skewed vision" of his own life.

In an interview just last month, Mani expressed a desire to return to the stage, revealing he had recently been to his lock-up to look at his bass guitars and was being encouraged by other musicians to pick it up again.

An Enduring Legacy and Personal Loss

Mani's basslines were fundamental to the sound of The Stone Roses. The iconic opening of "I Wanna Be Adored" from their seminal 1989 debut album is driven by his bass, crashing through the intro to create one of the most memorable openings in British rock history. Record shop Rough Trade paid tribute, calling him "the perfect example of how a bassist can be the beating heart of a band."

His influence extended far beyond recordings; The Stone Roses' legendary 1990 gig at Spike Island inspired a generation, including a teenage Liam Gallagher.

The musician's passing comes nearly two years to the day after the death of his beloved wife, Imelda, on November 18, 2023. She was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in November 2020 and died at the age of 52. The couple shared twin boys, Gene and George, who were born in January 2013.

Tributes from across the music industry and from fans continue to pour in for the much-loved rock icon, whose contribution to the Manchester music scene and British culture remains immeasurable.
