Sabrina Carpenter has said that anyone offended by her sexual lyrics only has themselves to blame. The 26-year-old singer addressed backlash over her honest songs and provocative stage performances, including the Juno sex position segment, in a new interview with Rolling Stone.
“It’s always so funny to me when people complain,” Carpenter said. “They’re like, ‘All she does is sing about this.’ But those are the songs that you’ve made popular. Clearly you love sex. You’re obsessed with it. It’s in my show.” She noted that while social media highlights her racier moments, her concerts also include ballads and introspective numbers.
The Espresso hitmaker also pointed to a broader issue of how women in music are scrutinised. “I’m talking about every female artist that is making art right now,” she said. “It’s something that keeps coming back. We just have to grow thicker skin, but they don’t have to learn how to shut their mouths.”
Carpenter faces fresh criticism over the cover of her upcoming album Man’s Best Friend, due on 29 August. The artwork shows her on her knees in a black minidress and heels, holding a hand to a man’s trouser leg while he grips her hair. A second image features a dog with a tag reading “Man’s Best Friend”.
Fans have called the cover “disturbing” and urged her to “get up”. One Instagram user wrote: “Lol this cover art is so disgusting. As a fan I don’t like it.” Another commented: “I dont wanna see no man dragging you around by your hair mother please get up.”
