Rap duo Pete and Bas, both in their 70s, have unveiled a new song featuring Wu-Tang Clan legend Method Man after calling him out for a collaboration online. The London-based rappers, known for their drill rap songs portraying them as old-school gangsters, are currently touring the UK.
New track 'Too Slick (Remix)'
Their new song, titled 'Too Slick (Remix)', will be released on Thursday evening and features a verse from Method Man, who sold millions of records with Wu-Tang Clan, including hits like C.R.E.A.M. and Protect Ya Neck. Fans of both have expressed their excitement.
The collaboration came after Pete and Bas called out Method Man online, leading the Wu-Tang Clan megastar to respond by saying: “Absolutely, are you kidding me? I f*** with y’all.”
From humble beginnings to global fame
Pete and Bas began making rap music together in 2017 when Pete was inspired by songs his granddaughter showed him. He told the BBC: “She was messing with my car radio stations and I thought 'what the hell is going on here?' and I changed them back. Then I thought, 'This ain't too bad'.”
The pair first met in a shop where Bas was apparently giving a piano lesson in the back room. After releasing their first song together in 2018, they have since released two albums and collaborated with famous rappers including T-Pain and M24.
Before beginning an online rap career, Pete had worked for Royal Mail and Westminster Council. Bas has not publicly shared details of his life previously, leaving some to speculate whether lyrics about going to prison are fact or fiction.
Fan excitement and on-stage incident
The pair found global fame in 2020 with the release of their song “Windowframe Cypher”, which racked up an impressive 4.5m views on YouTube. Since then they have brought their hardcore rap on tours of Europe, North America and Australia.
Fans are clearly excited for the upcoming release with Method Man. One fan wrote on social media: “When you guys spit, people stop what they’re doing and pay attention. I think that’s what’s happening here! - PS mad crazy tease!!!!” Another said: “Doing hip hop better than the yougins... Attention caught, attention given.”
In a dramatic on-stage incident in March, Bas appeared to pass out when he was hanging from the ceiling by a harness while dancers continued to perform underneath. But he quickly bounced back, posting a video from hospital alongside cigarettes and a takeaway pint.
Some fans suggested this was a stunt citing the video of the incident looking staged and being used to plug their tour. However, the duo’s management team wrote online: “We would like to apologise for last night's show, the good news is Pete is now in a stable condition. We'll be issuing refunds to all ticket holders.”
Making music is apparently doing Pete and Bas a world of good, with Pete telling the BBC: “If I wasn't doing music I'd probably be up to no good. The music has changed everything." Bas added: "I'd be sitting in my armchair with my feet up the chimney waiting to die. We're really living life to the full now.”
