Morrissey has confirmed he will release his first studio album in six years this March, ending a period of repeated delays and title changes for the record.
Album Details and Release Date
The former frontman of The Smiths will put out "Make-Up is a Lie" on 6 March 2026. The album has been produced by Joe Chiccarelli and will be released via Sire/Warner Records.
Fans can expect a cover of Roxy Music's track "Amazone" among the new material. However, it is another song, titled "Notre-Dame", that has already drawn significant attention and criticism.
Controversy Surrounds New Track
The song "Notre-Dame" appears to reference a right-wing conspiracy theory concerning the 2019 fire that devastated the Paris cathedral. This has sparked fresh debate around the singer's recent public statements and affiliations.
Morrissey has faced considerable controversy in recent years for his support of far-right political figures and for making inflammatory remarks on topics including racism and the MeToo movement. He was also photographed performing while wearing a badge for the For Britain party.
Tour and Smiths Business Sale
Alongside the album announcement, Morrissey confirmed he will continue his ongoing world tour. In a related move, he recently stated he is selling his business interests in the legendary band The Smiths.
He attributed this decision to what he called "malicious associations" with his former bandmates, signalling a further definitive step away from the group that launched his career.
A Long-Awaited Return
The announcement marks the end of a six-year wait for new original material from the iconic, if divisive, singer-songwriter. "Make-Up is a Lie" promises to be one of the most talked-about musical releases of the early spring, ensuring Morrissey remains firmly in the public eye both for his music and his personal politics.
