Music legend Sir Elton John is set for a spectacular return to the stage, headlining the iconic Rock in Rio festival in 2026. This major one-off performance comes just over three years after the final date of his record-breaking Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.
A Legendary Comeback
The 78-year-old megastar, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998, will take over the festival's colossal Palco Mundo (World Stage) on 7 September 2026. This famous stadium has a capacity of approximately 80,000 people and has previously hosted other music greats like Queen, Metallica, and Beyoncé.
Expressing his excitement about the comeback, the Rocket Man singer said he couldn't wait to get back to South America. He confirmed that he and his band are sounding 'as good as we ever have' and are eager to deliver a memorable performance.
Special Connection with Brazil
Sir Elton revealed his deep affection for his Brazilian audience, which played a key role in his decision to accept the offer. 'I've always had a fantastic time whenever we've played in Brazil,' he stated. 'I didn't manage to get to South America for the farewell tour, so when Rock In Rio asked me to play, I said 'yes' immediately.'
He emphasised the unique energy of these large-scale events, noting that the experience since ending his touring schedule has been 'unbeatable'. The singer also confirmed that he and his band still genuinely love performing together.
A New Chapter for Rock in Rio
Roberto Medina, the festival's creator and president, hailed the booking as a historic moment. He stated that Sir Elton's performance is set to 'write a new chapter in the history of the festival'.
'Rock in Rio was born to create unforgettable memories,' Medina said. 'We're not just bringing Elton John back — we're bringing a living legend. Having him on our World Stage is an honour.'
The first Rock in Rio was held in 1985 and featured headliners like Rod Stewart, AC/DC, and Queen. It has since grown into one of the world's most prominent music festivals, with a spin-off event, Rock in Rio Lisboa, also held in Portugal since 2004.
Tickets for Rock in Rio 2026 will be available to the general public on 9 December, exclusively via Ticketmaster Brasil.
