Delta Goodrem qualifies Australia for Eurovision grand final with stunning performance

Delta Goodrem has become the first Australian act to qualify for the Eurovision grand final since 2023, delivering a powerful performance of her power-ballad entry, Eclipse, at the 70th anniversary of the contest.

Standing before a glistening crescent moon and adorned in more than 7,000 Swarovski crystals, Goodrem performed a note-perfect rendition of the track. The 41-year-old singer made a dramatic trek downstage to a sparkling gold piano, where she performed a short solo before being propelled into the air on a platform rising from the instrument. The climax featured wind, fire and Goodrem's remarkable upper range.

Australia's entry was an early favourite behind Denmark and Finland. Goodrem's performance was described as precise and undeniable, offering a refreshingly self-assured showing after disappointing results for Australia in recent years. Last year's entry, Go-Jo, failed to progress with his song Milkshake Man, and in 2024, duo Electric Fields also fell in the semi-finals.

Only 35 countries are competing this year, the lowest number since 2003, after Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Slovenia and the Netherlands boycotted due to Israel's participation and its attacks on Gaza. Ahead of her performance, Goodrem said: 'Performing on the Eurovision stage is something I feel so deeply in my heart, carrying Australia with me in every note and every moment.' She also announced her seventh studio album, Pure, will be released on 6 November.

The Eurovision grand final will air on SBS On Demand from 5am AEST on Sunday 17 May.
