Alfie Boe Releases Heartfelt Tribute to Stone Roses Bassist Mani in New Single

Renowned musical theatre and opera singer Alfie Boe has unveiled a poignant new single dedicated to the memory of Gary "Mani" Mounfield, the late bassist for iconic bands The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. The track, titled "Face Myself," serves as the lead single from Boe's forthcoming album of the same name, scheduled for release on April 10.

Lyrical Homage to Manchester's Indie Scene

In "Face Myself," the 52-year-old tenor reflects nostalgically on the vibrant Manchester indie and dance music culture that defined his teenage years. The song features a direct lyrical tribute with the line: "good old Mani played it right." Boe elaborated on the inspiration behind the track, explaining that he was in the process of writing it when news broke of Mani's tragic passing in November last year at age 63.

"I put in a little tribute, which goes 'dreams are grown in Burnage skies, a golden past that made us cry, the prom is glorified with lights, for good old Mani played it right, those Cranwell boys, they sang along'," Boe shared. He noted that the reference to "Cranwell boys" alludes to brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis, who grew up on Cranwell Drive in the Burnage area of Manchester.

Personal Connection and Musical Roots

Although Boe admitted he only met Mani once and never had the chance to know him well, the bassist's influence on the Manchester music scene left a lasting impression. Boe's own musical journey includes a youth spent drumming in an indie band and contributing vocals as "the Opera Dude" for The Clint Boon Experience, a side project of Inspiral Carpets keyboardist Clint Boon.

"Face Myself is a tribute to the North and to my youth, back in the days when I was into the indie movement and hopped on the train to Manchester every weekend to see bands," Boe stated. He reminisced about the era when The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, and The Charlatans dominated the airwaves, with venues like the Hacienda and the Northern Quarter at the heart of the scene.

Upcoming Album and Tour Details

The upcoming album "Face Myself" marks a significant milestone for Boe, as it will be his first record consisting predominantly of original material. Known for his successful partnership with fellow singer Michael Ball and four UK number one albums, Boe is now channeling his personal experiences into this new project.

In addition to the album release, Boe has announced a UK tour scheduled for April and May, with tickets currently on sale. The tour is expected to feature performances of "Face Myself" and other tracks from the album, offering fans a live experience of his nostalgic homage to Manchester's musical heritage.

The song also includes the line: "the Roses sing our indie song, we bang the drum, home is the place where time won't change us', remembering the way we celebrated that music." This encapsulates the enduring spirit of the indie movement that Boe aims to honour through his music.
