Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds' Year Two season pass introduces Bayonetta, Godzilla, and Neon Genesis Evangelion content, along with a new Dual Match mode, new tracks, and console-inspired vehicles. The first wave of Year Two content was previewed following a successful first year for the kart racer.
Dual Match mode and new gameplay mechanics
The headline mode, Dual Match, pits two racers head-to-head on track, with each player always aware of the power-ups the other is collecting. This information is meant to help with defence, though its usefulness is limited when you are unsure if you have the ideal item to counter an incoming attack.
Dual Match is expected to appeal to veterans looking to settle a grudge with a specific rival. It introduces a new speed mechanic called Dual Boost, which fills a bar gradually based on track performance. While a welcome addition, it is unlikely to change the game as much as Knockout Tour did for Mario Kart World.
New tracks and characters
More exciting in the preview build is the new content. Bayonetta joins the roster with her vehicle, the Butterfly Witch, translating her glamorous personality well, though no dedicated course for her world was shown.
The Godzilla Escape track reworks the City Escape stage from Sonic Adventure 2 into a racecourse at the mercy of Godzilla's stomps and Atomic Blast. The track includes the legendary downhill section while avoiding blasts and racing around the monster's feet. Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidora do not appear as racers, but vehicles inspired by them are included.
Evangelion content and console vehicles
The Neon Genesis Evangelion content features Rei and Asuka as racers with dedicated vehicles, plus Tokyo-3 as a full track. The course races through the futuristic city during a background battle, with portions on building sides and across red water while Evangelion Unit-01 emerges from NERV.
Console-inspired vehicles include the Dreamcast, Genesis, and Saturn as raceable cars. The Genesis Tower US car features a Sonic 1 cartridge sticking up from the back seat. All three pay tribute to their respective consoles.
Year Two content arrives later this year on PS5, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2.
