Netflix's A Dog's Perfect Christmas Sparks Fear of Heartbreak
Netflix Dog Christmas Film Fans Fear Heartbreak

Netflix is set to release the festive film A Dog's Perfect Christmas on November 4, starring Milo Ventimiglia, Dennis Quaid and Jennifer Tilly. However, some viewers have already issued a warning about the release, fearing the emotional impact of the story.

The film follows in the footsteps of the tear-jerking dog movies A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey. Its IMDb description reads: "A sage Basset Hound narrates how his family faces turmoil when Mrs. Goss falls into an induced coma, and a new Corgi pup helps unite the scattered household during their mother's absence."

The trailer shows a family welcoming a Basset Hound into their home, with the pooch snuggling up to loved ones, tearing around the house and trying to pinch snacks from the kitchen table.

Fans Worried About the Dogs' Fate

Despite the feel-good festive premise, some viewers are steeling themselves for heartbreak after learning the film was written by W. Bruce Cameron and Cathryn Michon and directed by Michon. Cameron is well known for writing A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey, films that reduced many viewers to tears as they followed dogs through various stages of their lives, with their owners ultimately outliving them.

Reacting to the forthcoming release, many fans questioned whether the dogs would make it through the film. One viewer wrote: "I'll watch as long as dogs are both still alive when the titles come up..." Another added: "Looks really good. But before I watch I'll have too know if the dogs survive."

A third commented: "As long as the dogs don't die in the movie, I'm sold!" One more viewer said: "Can't wait. Please tell me no dogs die, it is a Christmas movie."

Potential Surge in Basset Hound Popularity

While some viewers are worried about the emotional storyline, others have predicted the film could trigger a surge in people wanting to welcome a Basset Hound into their homes. One person commented: "Bet the next dog on trend will be a Basset."

Basset Hounds are renowned for their distinctive looks, including long, floppy ears, short legs and droopy eyes, giving them a permanently sorrowful expression. The American Kennel Club describes the breed as low-key and laid-back, though it can occasionally be stubborn.

Its website states: "Among the most appealing of the AKC breeds, the endearing and instantly recognisable Basset Hound is a perennial favourite of dog lovers all over the world."

Despite their compact stature, Basset Hounds are powerfully built dogs with considerable stamina. Bred to follow scents, their remarkably keen noses make them exceptionally skilled trackers. These dogs are typically good-natured and easy-going around the home, yet become remarkably tenacious when they pick up a scent. They are equally well known for their characteristic, booming bark and their devoted, faithful temperament.
