Newcastle handed Aladji Bamba opportunity as Spurs show the way

Newcastle United midfielder Aladji Bamba has played just 27 minutes of competitive football since his £34.5million summer move from Monaco, and the club's under-21s side could provide a route back into action.

The 20-year-old was an unused substitute in Monday's 4-1 defeat at newly promoted Coventry City, two months into the season. Head coach Matthias Jaissle has pleaded for patience while the youngster adapts to a new country and league, but both Bamba and supporters would have expected more game-time for such a significant investment.

Midfield competition is fierce

Joe Willock, who began the season as a number 10, started alongside Nico Gonzalez at the CBS Arena. When everyone is fit, Jaissle has seven midfielders competing for two places. Lewis Miley, Joelinton, Jacob Ramsey and fellow summer signing Sean Steur are all currently ahead of Bamba in the pecking order, and it is difficult to see how his situation improves before the January transfer window unless injuries strike.

Bamba had only 25 senior appearances for Monaco before moving to Tyneside, but he played five times in last season's Champions League. Steur, who only broke into the Ajax team last season, has adapted quickly to English football.

International minutes and a possible under-21 route

Bamba played three times for France's under-21s during the international break, creating a goal in a win over Estonia as Les Bleus qualified for next summer's European Championships. He may earn another call-up for November's internationals, but those fixtures are still four weeks away.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison started and scored for Spurs' under-21s in their Jersey Mike's Trophy draw against Cheltenham Town on Tuesday evening. The Brazil international has not featured for the senior side since their opening day defeat at Brentford.

Newcastle's under-21s have their own Jersey Mike's Trophy game against Rotherham United at the start of November. Robbie Stockdale's side sit second in their group after a 3-1 win at York City and a 2-1 defeat to Bradford City, and a trip to the New York Stadium could offer Bamba minutes in a first-team environment.

The under-21s also face Sunderland in a Premier League 2 fixture at St James' Park on October 26, which could give Bamba valuable game-time in front of supporters at the club's home stadium.

How Jaissle manages Bamba's situation in the coming months will be telling, with questions over the wisdom of spending £34.5million on a midfielder who cannot get near the starting XI likely to intensify.
