A free fan-made game called Destiny: The Final Car allows Destiny 2 players to vent their frustrations at former Bungie CEO Pete Parsons by throwing tomatoes at his car collection. The game, presented as a parody raid, features Parsons floating around while players click to hurl tomatoes at passing cars labeled with titles like 'Crunch Enforcer' and 'Micro Management.' Once enough tomatoes are thrown, Parsons' invincible shield drops, allowing direct damage.
Fan Anger Over Bungie's Decline
Despite stepping down as CEO last year, Parsons remains a target of fan ire. Many blame him for Bungie's current state, which includes hundreds of layoffs following Sony's acquisition in 2022. In 2024, former staff publicly accused Parsons of poor management and demanded his resignation. His infamy grew after reports revealed he spent over $2.3 million (about £1.71 million) on classic cars since the acquisition.
Bungie stopped supporting Destiny 2 with new content, shifting focus to Marathon and other projects. Sony reportedly laid off about 400 employees, and there are no plans for Destiny 3. The studio's acquisition by Sony for $3.6 billion (about £2.7 billion) was deemed a loss last year, increasing pressure on Bungie to justify the purchase.
Leadership Uncertainty
After Parsons left, chief development officer Justin Truman took over but is reportedly stepping down, leaving Bungie's leadership unclear. Sony has been exerting more control over the studio, despite promises of independence when the deal was made. Updates for Marathon continue, but may slow due to reduced staff. Rumors of a MOBA project codenamed Gummy Bears saw its workforce integrated into Sony to form a new internal team.
The fangame reflects the sentiment that even after Parsons' departure, fans hold him responsible for Bungie's struggles. As one player noted, 'Pete Carsons, Destroyer of Guardians' sums up the community's view.
