Beyond Van Gogh Newcastle: Immersive Experience Review at Utilita Arena

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience at Newcastle's Utilita Arena promises 'Van Gogh like never seen before', and the touring show, which runs until August 9, delivers a memorable spectacle. The experience has already been seen by more than seven million people worldwide.

First Impressions and the Journey In

The show begins in the arena foyer, where fresh sunflowers nod to the artist's famous works. Visitors follow a route past information displays detailing the life of the post-Impressionist painter, who died in 1890 before gaining widespread recognition. Key moments from his life—including cutting off part of his ear, his time in an asylum, and his suicide—are presented alongside his relationships with brother Theo and fellow artist Gauguin.

The Main Immersive Space

Turning into the main exhibition space, the impact is immediate. A swirling, colourful mass of moving images envelops visitors, covering walls, pillar partitions, and the carpeted floor. The digital gallery features 300 artworks from all stages of Van Gogh's life, including sunny cornfields, landscapes with workers, beautiful flowers, night-time streets, coastal scenes, still lifes, his bedroom, a bar room, and self-portraits—including the one with his bandaged ear.

Surprises include a self-portrait that winks, a curl of smoke rising from his cigarette, and twinkling stars in Cafe Terrace at Night. Spectators passing the giant image appear to walk on its street. The show, by Annerin Productions, is accompanied by atmospheric music throughout.

Layout and Visitor Experience

The space is large but retains atmosphere. Visitors can walk freely and take their time. Wooden benches and floor space are available for seating. Fun touches include gilded picture frames for photos and a row of big sunflowers as a backdrop. A gift shop is at the end.

Final Verdict

Seeing it in person is completely different from photos or online previews. The experience is memorable, prompting a desire to visit again before it closes. Tickets are available online.
