A reader has described how a series of console breakdowns and lost passwords culminated in experiencing Tetris Effect on PlayStation VR, which he calls the greatest gaming experience of his life. The reader, an aging retro gamer who traditionally buys Nintendo consoles, never owned a PlayStation 4 until just before Christmas when his brother-in-law donated one. He also owns an Xbox Series S with a broken HDMI port, which he is debating whether to repair.
From Meta Quest 2 to PlayStation VR
About four years ago, the reader bought a Meta Quest 2, creating a pseudo account to avoid Facebook integration. He enjoyed Star Wars games and paid nearly £30 for Resident Evil 4, the most he has ever spent on a download game. However, after a year, Meta released a new headset and updates rendered his account inaccessible because he forgot his pseudo login, losing all downloaded games. He factory reset the headset for his daughter, but one controller broke. CeX quoted £80 for a replacement or repair, the same price as fixing the Xbox HDMI port.
Turning to the PlayStation 4, the reader discovered its VR capabilities. For £95 total, he acquired a PlayStation VR headset, Move controllers, and a charger. He reasoned that buying games on disc would ensure he could keep them permanently.
Discovering Tetris Effect
The reader first played Tetris Effect on Xbox Series S via Game Pass and never deleted it, calling it an indulgent game bordering on perfection. After the Xbox became faulty, he checked reviews for the PlayStation 4 version, which unanimously praised its immersion in VR. He bought it and was immediately captivated.
“I knew what I was letting myself in for, of course,” the reader wrote. “Now most games that I consider to be in the upper echelons, I never realise it until after the fact when I’ve completed it and I look back and I become amazed. Tetris Effect however, I realised about 10 minutes in that I was having one of the best gaming moments of my life and what a joy that was to behold.”
He ranks his top two games of all time as Zelda: Ocarina Of Time and Secret Of Mana on SNES, with number three varying over time (noting Lollipop Chainsaw as an “absolutely beautiful mess”). However, he states: “Ocarina Of Time is still my favourite game of all time but I have to say Tetris Effect on PlayStation VR is the greatest experience I’ve ever had as a gamer and that in itself takes in a lot of territory.”
The reader implores others to try it if they have the chance, saying, “If you ever get the chance? Or you have the means to do so and have never played it? I implore you to do so.”
