The 43-year-old donned a beige ensemble for the event, part of the Welcome Project founded by her and Prince Harry through their Archwell foundation.
Meghan's outfit included a £305 sleeveless turtleneck from Leset, £1,100 trousers by Gabriela Hearst, and £595 Manolo Blahnik heels. Her jewellery, however, accounted for the bulk of the cost: a £7,050 Cartier Love bracelet, the late Princess Diana's gold Tank watch, and an estimated £56,000 Lorraine Schwartz emerald cut diamond pinky ring.
The appearance drew criticism online, with one user on X writing, 'Makes so much sense to wear ridiculously expensive clothes to talk to refugees.' Another commented, 'She loves letting people not as well-off as her know how much she is above them.' Others defended her, saying the cost was mainly due to jewellery, with one noting, 'I do not include my wedding ring in my outfit cost.'
Meghan and Harry have resided in Montecito with their children since stepping down as working royals in 2020. The dinner event saw Meghan welcome Afghan women resettled in Southern California, preparing a meal together in Venice Beach.
