BBC Director of Comedy Jon Petrie has announced 10 new and returning shows at the BBC Comedy Festival in Belfast, championing affordable and distinctive comedy from across the UK. Among the highlights is the return of a beloved comedy series after a 14-year hiatus, featuring an all-star cast.
Speaking at the festival, Petrie and Eddie Doyle, Senior Head of Content Commissioning for BBC Northern Ireland, also revealed over half a million pounds of additional funding for new comedy in Northern Ireland. The money will be ringfenced exclusively for production spend on new comedy projects in the region for 2025/2026.
Petrie emphasised the BBC's commitment to original comedy, stating: 'The BBC continues to be the biggest single investor in original comedy content in the UK. For the second year running, eight out of the top 10 scripted comedies were on the BBC.' He added that great comedy relies on 'brilliant characters, sharp jokes, and a unique voice' rather than expensive sets or large casts.
Eddie Doyle highlighted Northern Ireland's unique sense of humour, saying: 'We’re known in Northern Ireland for our unique and sometimes dark sense of humour, so it’s fitting that Belfast is hosting the BBC Comedy Festival this year.' He noted the commissioning of new shows like Leonard & Hungry Paul and the return of Funboys.
The announcement underscores the BBC's dedication to nurturing homegrown talent and ensuring affordable, distinctive comedy that resonates with audiences across the UK.
