I tried hummus from different supermarkets to find the best. Hummus makes for a delicious food choice, whether as part of a meal or for a quick snack. While homemade hummus is certainly a tasty choice, it can be much easier to just pick up a tub when doing your weekly shop. Almost every supermarket has its own range, from a basic recipe to hummus with jalapeno or caramelised onions.
The Taste Test
As a huge hummus fan, I decided to try a range of basic supermarket hummus tubs to determine which is the best. Picking up options from Lidl, Morrisons, and the Co-op, I also purchased Ramona's hummus to see how these would compare to my favourite option.
Ramona's
Prior to conducting my taste test, my favourite of the supermarket hummus offerings was Ramona's, and while there are other tasty options, this still remains at the top of my list. However, at £3.50 it's not exactly the cheapest option available. While you may have to fork out a little extra, Ramona's Hummus has just that bit more flavour than the other options, especially when it comes to the array of plain hummus on offer. Alongside their plain 'heavenly hummus', Ramona's also offers jalapeno, red pepper, and beetroot options for those looking for something a little extra. Rating: 5/5
Morrisons
At £1.49, Morrisons' classic hummus is certainly a cheaper option than Ramona's; however, it's still more expensive than Lidl's offering, which I thought was actually quite a bit nicer. Morrisons' hummus was somewhat plain and definitely one of the weaker hummuses I've had. While I might buy it again if I really needed some hummus and only had a Morrisons nearby, it's not one I would go out of my way to buy — and even if I were in Morrisons, I'd perhaps opt for a different brand. Rating: 2.75/5
Lidl
Lidl's hummus was the cheapest at just 95p, and although it wasn't the best, I'd certainly pay more for the same product. It was more flavourful than the Morrisons option, but it wasn't quite as tasty as Ramona's or Co-op's. Although not quite the tastiest, Lidl's hummus was perfectly smooth, making it a great choice to pair with carrot sticks. Rating: 3.5/5
Co-op
For me, Co-op topped the list of the own-brand hummuses, although it still wasn't quite at the level of Ramona's. At £1.40 it was certainly cheaper, and is definitely one I'll be picking up again. Packed with flavour, the hummus was smooth and still retaining the perfect level of thickness, great for serving alongside carrot, cucumber, breadsticks, or whatever else you choose to dip. Rating: 4/5
In conclusion, while Ramona's remains the overall winner, Co-op offers the best value among supermarket own-brands.
