Grandma's Wrong Number Text Sparks 10-Year Thanksgiving Tradition
Wrong text leads to 10-year Thanksgiving friendship

What began as a simple misdialled text message has evolved into one of the internet's most cherished modern traditions, celebrating a decade of unexpected friendship.

The Text That Started It All

Back in 2016, Wanda Dench, intending to invite her grandson to Thanksgiving dinner, accidentally sent a group text to a new number. That number belonged to Jamal Hinton, a high school senior at the time, who initially thought the message was from his own grandmother.

However, Jamal quickly grew suspicious. “Ninety percent of me already knew it wasn’t my grandmother,” he later recalled, noting his real grandma doesn't text. To confirm, he asked for a selfie. The photo he received was of Wanda Dench, a complete stranger.

Jamal's now-iconic reply was both cheeky and endearing: "You not my grandma. Can I still get a plate though?" accompanied by his own photo. Wanda’s heartwarming response was immediate: "Of course you can. That’s what grandma’s do...feed every one."

From Viral Moment to Lifelong Bond

After Jamal shared the wholesome exchange online, it swiftly went viral. This led to Wanda's grandson organising a meeting at her house. “I was 17 at the time, and it was scary,” Jamal admitted, explaining the 45-minute drive to a stranger's house was only eased by the presence of media.

The meeting was a resounding success, sparking a Thanksgiving tradition that has continued every year since. They take turns hosting the festive meal, solidifying a bond that transcended their initial accidental contact.

A Decade of Friendship Through Life's Challenges

This year marks a significant milestone: ten consecutive Thanksgivings celebrated together. Their unique friendship has weathered significant life events, including Jamal growing into adulthood, the global pandemic, the passing of Wanda's husband, and her own battle with breast cancer.

"There was no generation gap at all… like we were just like pals for forever," Wanda, now 68, reflected. "That grew into family and love, and I feel so blessed."

Jamal echoed the sentiment, marvelling at the journey. “It’s just amazing to sit back and think that one mistaken text led to so many people’s happiness and joy,” he said. Their story continues to captivate fans worldwide, who eagerly await their annual reunion post each November.
