In 2016, a simple text message mix-up led to an unexpected Thanksgiving invitation that has blossomed into a decade-long friendship. Wanda Dench, from Arizona, intended to text her grandson about Thanksgiving dinner plans but accidentally messaged Jamal Hinton, then 17. Hinton, who was in class, replied asking if he could still come, and Dench warmly welcomed him.
The exchange went viral after Hinton posted screenshots on Twitter, garnering over 180,000 retweets. Dench received hundreds of messages from strangers, some asking for their own invitations, but she was touched by the positive responses, especially amid the racial tensions following the 2016 US election.
Hinton and Dench met in person on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and Hinton officially accepted the invitation. Dench also invited Hinton's parents to join them. The story became a symbol of kindness and unity during a divisive time.
Ten years later, the two have maintained their friendship, celebrating Thanksgiving together annually. Dench told local media that the experience reminded her of the goodness in people, while Hinton noted it was heartening to see kindness prevail despite political and racial divides.
