West Point Cancels Tom Hanks Award Ceremony
West Point Cancels Tom Hanks Award Ceremony

The West Point Association of Graduates has cancelled a ceremony to honour actor Tom Hanks with the Sylvanus Thayer Award, just weeks before it was scheduled to take place. The decision was communicated in an email to faculty by retired Colonel Mark Bieger, who stated it would allow the academy to focus on its core mission of preparing cadets.

The award, given to an 'outstanding citizen of the United States', was announced in May. Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner, was recognised for his service and accomplishments in the national interest, including his role as national spokesperson for the World War II Memorial and support for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial.

No specific reason was given for the cancellation, though Hanks has donated to Democrats, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama, and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has taken actions against perceived enemies, including revoking security clearances and blocking news organisations.
