Graham Newton, the 54-year-old chairman of Stockton Rugby Club who dedicated 40 years to the club and served as its 'dynamic' chairman for the past decade, has died suddenly, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the North East rugby community.
40 years of service and leadership
Newton, described as 'rugby personified,' was involved with Stockton Rugby Club as a player, coach, administrator, and most recently as chairman. The club announced his death with 'immense sadness,' stating that he had been a 'most dynamic chairman' for the last ten years. Under his leadership, the club achieved success on the pitch and saw significant growth in the women's game.
Terry Wilson, an executive committee member at the club, said everyone is in a state of complete shock. 'We are all devastated and in shock. He led the club with such energy and passion. Even from hospital he was emailing people telling them what needed doing,' Wilson said. 'As a club you could never replace someone like Graham. He was known all over the North East in rugby circles. He was very much a can-do person.'
Community tributes and legacy
Hundreds of condolence messages have poured in from individuals and clubs. Billingham Rugby Club paid tribute, saying: 'The North East rugby community has lost one of its true rugby people with the passing of Graham Newton. His dedication, leadership and love for the game earned him the respect and admiration of so many across our rugby family.'
One individual commented: 'He was rugby personified and it's a black day for SRFC but the legacy he leaves behind is his gift. RIP Newt. You're going to be a hard act to follow.' Another remarked: 'Newts is a legend. He made sure the club thrived no matter what. He made sure every player and every person had a space at the club.'
Wilson added: 'He has left us a great legacy and we just have to build on that. Graham was central to all of our lives and we will all miss him terribly.' The club's immediate priority is supporting Newton's wife, Michelle, and daughters, Millie and Hannah, through this devastating period.
