Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn, stars of the hit series 'Scandal,' have revealed that fans frequently ask them to run for president in real life. In a joint interview for Variety and CNN's Actors on Actors series, Washington said she is 'constantly' told she should run for office, while Goldwyn noted he gets similar requests 'on a street corner.'
Goldwyn, who played President Fitzgerald Grant on the Shonda Rhimes-created drama, said he used to respond by thanking people but explaining it was 'a really bad idea.' Washington countered that she believes Goldwyn would not be a terrible president because he would assemble a strong team and genuinely cares. Goldwyn joked he would bring her into his administration, but Washington declined, saying she would not be available.
The actors also discussed the fate of their characters, Olivia Pope and Fitz, after the series finale. The show ended with Olivia walking away from the White House, and a final scene showed the pair saying 'Hi' to each other—their traditional way of reconnecting. Washington and Goldwyn confirmed that they believe the characters ended up together, with Goldwyn adding that they are 'in couples therapy.'
Goldwyn currently appears in two TV series: as media overlord Bob Lipka on 'Hacks' and as Manhattan district attorney Nicholas Baxter on 'Law & Order.' Washington stars in the Apple TV+ thriller 'Imperfect Women,' based on Araminta Hall's novel, playing a CEO whose life is disrupted by a friend's murder.
