The entertainment world is in mourning following the tragic death of Victoria Jones, the 34-year-old daughter of acclaimed actor Tommy Lee Jones. Victoria was found dead in the early hours of New Year's Day in an upscale San Francisco hotel.
A Tragic Discovery on New Year's Day
Emergency services were called to the Fairmont San Francisco at 2:52 am on Thursday, 1 January. According to the San Francisco Fire Department, they responded to a call for medical aid. A source informed The Daily Mail that a guest on the 14th floor initially thought Victoria might be intoxicated before alerting hotel staff.
Staff quickly realised she was unresponsive and immediately began CPR while calling for an ambulance. Despite the efforts of first responders, Victoria was pronounced dead at the scene. The San Francisco Police Department and the Medical Examiner's office also attended the incident.
A police statement confirmed officers responded at approximately 3:14 am to a report of a deceased person at a hotel on the 900 block of Mason Street. The cause of death remains unknown and is under investigation.
No Signs of Foul Play or Suicide
Initial reports indicate a mysterious and non-suspicious circumstance surrounding the tragedy. A source close to the investigation told The Daily Mail that there were no visible signs of foul play, such as trauma to the body.
Furthermore, police did not discover any drug paraphernalia at the scene. Crucially, the source also stated there were no indications that Victoria may have taken her own life. It remains unclear whether she was a registered guest at the hotel or how she came to be on the 14th floor.
A Brief Foray into Acting Alongside Her Father
Although she had not appeared on screen for over a decade, Victoria Jones had a brief acting career, most notably appearing in films starring her famous father. Her film debut came in the 2002 blockbuster Men in Black II.
In a memorable scene, she played a family member whose home was being used as a secret weapons stash by the film's agents. Her on-screen family watches in stunned silence as the agents collect their gear before having their memories wiped.
Her collaboration with her father continued in the 2005 drama The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, which Tommy Lee Jones both starred in and directed. Victoria played an 'immigrant girl'. That same year, she also appeared in the drama Sorry, Haters with Robin Wright and had a role in an episode of One Tree Hill.
Her final acting credit was in her father's 2014 directorial effort, The Homesman, where she was credited as 'Woman (Hebron)'.
Tommy Lee Jones had previously praised his daughter's talent, telling the New Yorker in 2005 that she was a "good actress" with a SAG card and spoke impeccable Spanish. He shared a charming anecdote about having to 'fire' her when, as a 14-year-old on set, she refused to get out of bed for a 5 am call time, only for the production staff to secretly rush her to set.
A Life in the Public Eye
Despite her retreat from acting, Victoria occasionally appeared on the red carpet with her father in recent years. She was pictured alongside him at the 2017 premiere of his film Just Getting Started in Hollywood and accompanied him to the opening ceremony of the Tokyo International Film Festival later that same year, where he presided over the competition jury.
Victoria Jones was the daughter of Tommy Lee Jones and his second wife, Kimberlea Cloughley. The actor was married to Cloughley from 1981 to 1996, and the couple also had a son, Austin, 42. Jones is now married to Dawn Laurel-Jones.
The San Francisco Medical Examiner's office is conducting an investigation to determine the official cause of Victoria's untimely death. The police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
