Spencer Matthews has conquered what he describes as his toughest mental challenge yet, overcoming a painful knee injury during a grueling 24-hour endurance trek across Mount Snowdon. The former Made In Chelsea star, speaking exclusively to Daily Star, revealed how O2 Satellite technology helped him push through the most difficult moments.
A Daunting 92km Route
Matthews undertook an impressive 24-hour endurance challenge, covering a 92km route across Mount Snowdon with the assistance of O2 Satellite, the UK's first fully launched satellite-to-mobile service. This technology provides connectivity in areas beyond the reach of traditional mobile networks, ideal for adventurers pushing their limits like Matthews.
The reality TV star told Daily Star that he experienced a lot of adrenaline and exhilaration during the challenge, which involved nearly 100km of distance and over 6,000 metres of elevation, completed through the night. He explained: I was excited to be the first to try the new O2 Satellite technology in action and see how it would improve my experience and time. It was reassuring to know I would have a way of staying connected throughout.
Knee Injury Threatens Completion
During the challenge, Matthews sustained a knee injury that cast doubt on whether he could finish. He said: It was frustrating because things had been going pretty well up until that point. Whenever something goes wrong during a challenge like this, your mind immediately jumps to whether you're going to be able to finish. I had not trained elevation before, so this experience was new to me.
Fortunately, Matthews had the best team around him, and they were able to adapt and keep moving. He explained: Being able to communicate with the team throughout the challenge gave me confidence that we could make the right decisions and keep moving forward. The fact that nobody had ever completed this specific route before was also a driving force for him to persevere.
Mental and Physical Struggles
He added: At times we considered adapting the route to account for the knee, but in the end that would have felt like a concession I did not want to make. I knew going into the challenge that it was a big undertaking. The weather was not always on my side, and the terrain was brutal.
Running through the night, Matthews felt well looked after thanks to O2 Satellite. He said: Safety is critical. Challenges like this should push your limits, but they should not involve taking unnecessary risks. We were moving through some very remote areas where traditional mobile coverage is not always available, so having O2 Satellite there to help us stay connected, access routes, check weather conditions, and communicate with the support team was genuinely reassuring throughout the challenge.
He also valued the ability to stay in touch with his family: I was also able to talk with my wife Vogue and the family no matter where I went, meaning they were comfortable too. Having a great team around me and being able to stay connected throughout some very remote parts of the route was a big help mentally.
The Toughest Part: 3 AM
The former Made In Chelsea star revealed that everything feels harder at three in the morning, which was the most challenging part of the entire quest. He said: The overnight section was probably the toughest part mentally. At the same time, it is very special to be out in the mountains at night. It is peaceful and you get a completely different perspective on the landscape.
Remarkably Quick Recovery
Despite the difficulty, Matthews recovered in just three days. He said: Honestly, the recovery was not too bad. Once I returned to running on flat ground, my knee became less aggravated, and I was able to resume my normal routine within two to three days.
Reflecting on the experience, he said: Looking back, one of the biggest takeaways from the challenge was the importance of planning and having the right support. Having access to O2 Satellite throughout the challenge gave me real peace of mind and allowed me to focus on completing what was one of the toughest endurance challenges I have ever attempted.
