Harry and Meghan Set for UK Return with Children After Security Change
Harry and Meghan Set for UK Return with Children

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly preparing to bring their children to Britain for the first time in four years, following a reported change in security arrangements for an upcoming visit. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to travel to the UK next month with Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, to attend a one-year countdown event for the Invictus Games in Birmingham.

Security Concerns Addressed

Reports this week suggested that a "safe return" for the family is now possible. However, sources indicated that there has been no upgrade to the threat level assessment carried out by the Government's Royal and VIP Executive Committee, despite an ongoing review of the risks facing the couple. The Home Office has still not granted taxpayer-funded, round-the-clock armed police protection for the visit.

A Government spokesman stated: "It is our long-standing policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements, as doing so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals' security."

King Charles' Intervention

King Charles is believed to have stepped in by offering support through his own resources, enabling Harry and Meghan to bring their children to Britain for what would be their first visit since 2022. This intervention comes after Harry lost a legal challenge against the Home Office last year regarding the downgrading of his security arrangements. Following the ruling, the Duke said he did not believe it was safe to bring Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet to the UK.

Significance of the Visit

The proposed trip marks a significant shift from that position and would see the family spend five days in Britain for the Invictus Games countdown celebrations. The Invictus Games remain Harry's flagship charitable project and one of the causes most closely associated with his public life since leaving frontline royal duties. The family visit also comes against the backdrop of ongoing attempts to improve relations between Harry and his father.

In September last year, the Duke and the King held a long-awaited reunion at Clarence House during one of Harry's visits to Britain for charity engagements. Although the meeting was brief, it was their first face-to-face encounter in 18 months and prompted renewed speculation that relations between the pair could be improving.

Historical Context

Harry has travelled to the UK several times since 2020, but Meghan and the children have largely stayed in California. The Prince was most recently in Britain for a two-day Court of Appeal hearing in London, while Meghan has not set foot in the country for nearly four years. The forthcoming visit would be her first major public return to the UK since attending Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

Since the Sussexes moved to the United States, King Charles has seen his grandchildren in person only once. Archie spent much of his first year living in Britain before the family relocated overseas, while Lilibet was born in California after the move. Her sole trip to the UK came in 2022, when she celebrated her first birthday with family and friends at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.
