Keith Urban Faces Backlash for Changing Lyrics of Song Written for Nicole Kidman

Keith Urban has sparked controversy after altering the lyrics of 'The Fighter', a song he wrote about his estranged wife Nicole Kidman, during a recent concert. The 57-year-old country singer performed the track with Maggie Baugh on his High and Alive World Tour, changing the line 'When they're tryna get to you, baby I'll be the fighter' to 'When they're tryna get to you, Maggie I'll be your guitar player'.

Maggie Baugh shared a clip of the moment on Instagram, captioning it 'Did Keith Urban just say that.' Fans reacted negatively, with comments calling the move 'trashy' and 'the ultimate ick'. One wrote, 'You simply don't do that,' while another said, 'Nicole deserves much better.'

Urban originally released 'The Fighter' in 2016, featuring Carrie Underwood, and had previously explained that the lyrics were inspired by his relationship with Kidman. He told Billboard the song was 'like a vow' about protecting and healing his partner. A 2016 viral video showed the couple singing the song together in a car, with Kidman exclaiming, 'Oh my god, I love this song!'

The backlash comes after news broke that Kidman filed for divorce on Tuesday, seeking to be the primary residential parent of their daughters, Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14. The couple had been married for 19 years.

In a separate incident, a recent interview with Urban on Australian radio show Jonesy & Amanda has resurfaced, where he gave curt responses when asked about his love story with Kidman. When host Amanda Keller suggested their meeting at the 2005 G'Day USA Gala might have been fate, Urban replied, 'No, I think it would,' and later said, 'You never know. Anyway, moving on.'
