Ryan Thomas Opens Up About ADHD Diagnosis and Medication Journey
Former Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas has publicly shared details of his recent ADHD diagnosis, describing the experience as life-changing and emotionally overwhelming. The television personality, who is engaged to Lucy Mecklenburgh, revealed his diagnosis during a new episode of his family podcast, At Home With The Thomas Bro's.
Initial Embarrassment and Reluctance to Share
Thomas admitted to feeling significant embarrassment about his ADHD diagnosis, explaining that he had initially been too self-conscious to discuss the condition publicly. "ADHD for me has been a big problem and I've not actually spoke about it yet because if I'm really honest, I was quite embarrassed that I had ADHD," the actor told his brothers Adam and Scott during the podcast recording.
He reflected on how perceptions of ADHD have evolved, noting that "growing up, as kids, ADHD, I don't feel like, was ever a thing – or it was loosely spoke about." This historical context contributed to his initial reluctance to acknowledge and address his diagnosis.
Medication Challenges and Disappointing Results
Following his formal diagnosis, Thomas began medication treatment but has experienced disappointing results compared to others' experiences. "Friends that are on the medication have said it changes your life instantly, like the limitless pill," he shared. "And it's been quite disheartening for me because I'm on the medication every day."
The actor has been taking medication for three to four weeks and recently increased his dosage, but continues to struggle with symptoms. "I still feel overwhelmed. I still misplace things," Thomas revealed, though he acknowledged some minor improvements in his ability to focus on writing tasks.
Concerns About Medication Dependency
Thomas expressed particular concern about becoming reliant on medication, stating clearly that "it's being reliant on medication that I don't like." This sentiment reflects a broader anxiety many individuals experience when beginning long-term pharmaceutical treatments for neurological conditions.
Interestingly, Thomas reported that he has not experienced two common side effects his doctor warned about: reduced sex drive and decreased appetite. With characteristic humor, he noted, "I'm like a horny motherf***er that wants to eat all the time... It's not working," referring to the medication's failure to produce these particular side effects.
Broader Implications for Mental Health Awareness
Thomas's candid discussion contributes to growing public conversations about ADHD and mental health treatment, particularly among adult populations. His experience highlights the variability of medication responses and the emotional complexities surrounding diagnosis and treatment.
The actor's willingness to share his personal journey, despite initial embarrassment, may help reduce stigma and encourage others facing similar challenges to seek appropriate diagnosis and support. His story underscores that medication responses can vary significantly between individuals, and that treatment often requires patience and adjustment.
