During a recent episode of the BBC's The Repair Shop, expert Richard Fraser issued an apology after a guest broke down over a challenging restoration. The emotional moment occurred when John and Margaret Ivin brought in a section of their kitchen wall that had crumbled into pieces.
Hidden Message Discovered
The couple discovered the message during a kitchen renovation the previous summer. A builder found writing on the wall that read: "This is original wallpaper, Friday 4:15, 8th of December 1989. Please leave this wallpaper. Chris." Margaret explained: "It was a complete shock to see it there. It was our late son, Christopher. Back when he was about 14."
Their son Christopher died at age 35 from a rare form of testicular cancer. Margaret shared: "He got a very, very rare form of cancer. Testicular cancer, coming up to 35. It was 18 months from diagnosis to when he died." John added that it happened "so quick," prompting Dominic Chinea to express his condolences.
Emotional Impact
Margaret's voice broke as she spoke about her loss: "When you lose a child, you never get over it. You get through it, we've just got through." The builder had cut the message out of the wall, but it quickly crumbled due to fragile plaster.
Richard Fraser, tasked with restoring the piece, admitted his anxiety: "The whole thing fills me with terror. It's so fragile, it's so brittle. You just have to breathe on it, and it's falling apart. So I don't want to move it too much." He later apologized for the difficulty of the fix.
Successful Restoration
When the couple returned to see the restored item, they were nervous. John said: "It's what it represents, it's our son. Our late son, it's part of his life." Seeing the piece completely fixed, Margaret gasped: "That's amazing." Both were moved to tears as John wiped his eyes. Margaret added: "What can I say? What can I say? It's funny handwriting, he would be chuffed to bits to see that. I mean, he was what, 14? and he would've been 48 this year."
Dominic praised Richard's work: "I know that Rich had his challenges with trying to piece this back together, but I think he's done a great job." The couple agreed, noting how fragile the piece was when they left it.
