The Prince of Wales could not contain his laughter when a young pupil at a Welsh language school in London gave a brutally honest assessment of England's prospects at the ongoing World Cup. During a visit to Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain (The London Welsh School) on Tuesday, Prince William asked a female student: "Do you think England are going to do well?" Her immediate reply was: "Hopefully not!" The prince responded with a hearty laugh, as captured by S4C Newyddion footage.
School's Unique Role in Promoting Welsh Culture
Founded in 1958, Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain is a Welsh-medium primary school in London and the only such primary school outside of Wales and Patagonia. It plays a vital role in promoting Welsh language and culture among families living in the capital. The prince's visit aimed to engage with pupils and celebrate Welsh heritage.
Support for Team Wales Ahead of Commonwealth Games
Beyond the World Cup banter, Prince William's primary purpose was to join pupils in sending good wishes to Team Wales ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled for July 23 to August 2. The games will feature 10 sports and six para-sports across venues in Glasgow. Team Wales will field a squad of 114 athletes, including 67 women and 47 men, aged from 16 to 73. The prince is also expected to meet athletes who recently received their official team kit.
Prince William is known for supporting both England and Wales in sporting events, often attending rugby matches at both the Principality Stadium and Twickenham. His visit underscored his commitment to Welsh culture and sports.
