Prince Harry has been accused of “putting the knife in” by a royal expert following his latest tell-all interview with GQ, in which he discussed family “drama” and the scars left by family rifts.
In the interview, Harry spoke about grieving the relationship he once had with his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William. He also mentioned that some scars from family rifts stay forever, and while he wants to work through problems, not everyone does. He added that he no longer has time for family drama.
Royal experts criticise Harry's comments
After the interview, Harry’s team insisted that the comments were made in a general context and not aimed at his own family. However, speaking on The Daily Mirror’s Pod Save the King YouTube show, the Mirror's royal editor Russell Myers criticised the duke.
Myers said: "I mean talking about scars sticking around forever, he was the one who caused these scars. He was the one who put the knife in to create the wounds... Why is he doing this so publicly? And surely why can he not just say sorry?"
The Mirror’s deputy royal editor Jennifer Newton suggested that for Harry, he may feel this is the only way to communicate his feelings to his older brother, who reportedly refuses to answer Harry’s calls or even talk to him.
Brass neck over scars comment
Myers continued to criticise Harry’s choice of words, saying: "I'll be honest, the absolute brass neck of talking about scars sticking around forever. I imagine the majority of the royal family will feel that they can't let go of the Oprah interview, Harry’s book… and now he has the gall to say that he wants to make up. I mean, you just can't have it all your own way, all of the time. And talking about there's enough drama in the world, I mean he caused the drama!"
Prince Harry’s interview with GQ comes just months after he relocated back to Britain in August with his wife and children. Despite now living back in his home country, it is believed he has not seen his royal relatives face-to-face.
Strained relationship with William
While a meeting with King Charles, whom he last saw in July, is probably on Harry’s agenda, a meeting with his brother William seems unlikely, as the brothers have not been on talking terms for years.
It is rumoured that the final straw for William was Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare, marking the biggest blow in their already tense relationship. While William and Harry have been in the same room on occasion since, it is believed they did not communicate with one another. Although Harry talks about a desire to reconcile with his older brother, William has always remained tight-lipped on the matter.
