Peter Kay fans were delighted on Friday night as a compilation of his best sketches aired on BBC One's Peter Kay's Comedy Shuffle, marking his return to television after a three-year hiatus. The show featured beloved routines, including the "misheard song lyrics" segment from his The Tour That Doesn't Tour - Tour.
Viewers took to Twitter to express their joy, with many noting that even familiar sketches still provoked laughter. One fan wrote: "Watching #PeterKaysComedyShuffle routines that are 20yrs old and we are still laughing out loud at them ... Fenella watching some of it for the 1st time is howling & Mr B's dad routine has been rumbled!" Another added: "@peter kay_co_uk I REALLY needed a laugh today, and you obliged on your #peterkayscomedyshuffle Thank you x"
Kay has kept a low profile since cancelling his tour in 2017 for undisclosed reasons. His only public appearance this year was in April, when he briefly appeared on the BBC's Big Night In to raise funds for NHS workers. Wearing sunglasses and a large hat, he recreated his iconic "Is This The Way To Amarillo" sketch as a tribute to key workers.
Aside from that, Kay's only new material has been an audio episode of his sitcom Car Share released in April, and a new Car Share sketch in the book Dear NHS: 100 Stories To Say Thank You. In the sketch, main character John breaks down during a brain scan after choosing a poignant Simon and Garfunkel song.
