Pete Davidson Describes 'Primal' Protective Urges Following Fatherhood

Comedian and actor Pete Davidson has candidly discussed the profound transformation he has experienced since becoming a father, revealing unexpected "primal" instincts that have reshaped his demeanor. The Saturday Night Live alumnus, known for his laidback and humorous persona, admitted that fatherhood has turned him into an intensely protective figure, ready to defend his newborn daughter at any cost.

The Surge of Protective Instincts

In a recent interview with People magazine, Davidson, 32, expressed astonishment at his own reactions since he and his girlfriend, actress and model Elsie Hewitt, welcomed their daughter, Scottie Rose, in December. "It's funny. It's like I didn't understand this. You're just ready to fight anyone. It’s really funny," Davidson shared, highlighting the sudden shift in his behavior.

He elaborated on this newfound aggression, stating, "It's like, chill out. No one's doing anything to your kid... But you have this overly protective like...if one paparazzi guy pops out I'm going to f***ing beat the living s*** out of him. So that's a weird gear because I'm not a fighter guy." Davidson attributed these feelings to a deep-seated, instinctual response, musing, "But you develop this like, 'Is that person looking at my baby? What are you looking at?' You're very, very hyper aware. But I guess that goes back to caveman times, you know? It's very...what do they say? It's like primal?"

Embracing the Joys of Fatherhood

Despite the surprising protective urges, Davidson emphasized that fatherhood has been overwhelmingly positive. He is relishing the "cute stuff" with Hewitt, such as dressing their daughter in adorable baby clothes. This chapter fulfills a long-held dream for Davidson, who in a 2022 interview declared that becoming a father was his ultimate aspiration, describing himself as "definitely a family guy." At that time, he excitedly anticipated, "It would be so fun to dress up a little dude. I’m so excited for that chapter."

Navigating Public Scrutiny

The journey to parenthood has not been without its challenges, particularly regarding public attention. Davidson and Hewitt, 30, announced their expanding family on social media shortly after revealing their relationship, with Hewitt humorously posting on Instagram, "welp now everyone knows we had sex." Davidson has previously expressed guilt over the extra scrutiny Hewitt faced during her pregnancy, telling an iHeart Radio show in July, "Anything I do or she does now is gonna be a thing."

He added, "She’s never made me feel this way or said anything, but I feel so guilty and horrible that I could not allow her to have the ideal pregnancy that almost every woman gets to have and enjoy."

Welcoming Scottie Rose

Scottie Rose Hewitt Davidson was born on December 12, with the new parents announcing the joyous news on Hewitt's Instagram through a series of heartfelt photos. Hewitt captioned the post, "My best work yet, I am absolutely overflowing with love and gratitude and disbelief," while Davidson contributed, "Wu tang forever." This moment marked the beginning of a new, transformative chapter for the couple, blending the primal instincts of protection with the tender joys of family life.
