Graham Greene, the Canadian actor best known for his Oscar-nominated role in the 1990 film 'Dances with Wolves', has died at the age of 73. He passed away on Monday in Toronto after a long illness.
Greene, a pioneer for Indigenous actors in Hollywood, made his big break with 'Dances with Wolves', where he played Kicking Bird. The role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1991. The film itself won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Kevin Costner.
Throughout his career, Greene appeared in numerous major films, including 'Maverick', 'Die Hard with a Vengeance', 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2', and 'Molly's Game'. He was also part of the ensemble cast of 'The Green Mile', which earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
On television, Greene had a prolific career with roles in 'Northern Exposure', 'Murder She Wrote', 'Reservation Dogs', 'The Last of Us', and many others. He won a Grammy in 2000 for Best Spoken Word Album for Children and received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2021.
Born in 1952 on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Canada, Greene began his acting career in theatre in the 1970s. He is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, and his daughter, Lilly Lazare-Greene.
