Linda Noskova broke down in tears after winning the Wimbledon women's singles title on Saturday, delivering a poignant tribute to her late mother that left BBC viewers and nine-time champion Martina Navratilova weeping.
All-Czech final ends in emotional victory
The 21-year-old Czech defeated compatriot Karolina Muchova, the world No. 9, 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 on Centre Court to secure her first Grand Slam title. The match was a rollercoaster, with Noskova overcoming a resilient Muchova in three sets.
Noskova's triumph carried deep personal significance. Her mother died of cancer on the eve of the 2024 Championships, when Noskova was just 19. In her acceptance speech, the new champion fought back tears as she acknowledged her mother's role in her career.
Heartbreaking speech honors mother's memory
“There's also one more person I would like to thank, which is my mum. I would definitely would not be standing here without her so thank you. Guys, I don't cry normally so this is not okay for me,” Noskova said, as reported by the Express. “I have been enjoying these two weeks so much, all the sad tears, the happy tears, the sweat and blood going into this. It was all worth it, so I will definitely never forget these two weeks.”
As she spoke, cameras captured Martina Navratilova, a nine-time Wimbledon champion, weeping in the audience. Commentator Sam Smith remarked: “For Noskova to come here, a little over two years since she lost her mother to cancer right before Wimbledon 2024 and lift the title at 21 in such a rollercoaster of a final shows you she really is a true champion.”
Viewers at home also moved to tears
BBC viewers shared their emotional reactions on social media. One X user posted: “I started out saying the final is boring, and ended up sobbing crying at Linda thanking her mom who passed away and seeing Muchova cry... that was actually a rollercoaster of emotions, tennis is beautiful.” Another wrote: “Linda Novoska got me ugly crying out here this morning. What a moving winner speech. That shoutout to her mom. Just wow!!!”
Under a BBC clip of the moment, supporters left messages such as: “So sad, our thoughts are with her.”
Noskova thanks team and fans
In her speech, Noskova also thanked her father, team, and friends. “I want to thank my Dad for coming here, for my family members flying here, I know you don't like flying so I appreciate it,” she said. She expressed gratitude to her coach of six years, her atmosphere manager Agatha, and her sponsors. “I would not be here without you,” she added.
The 2026 Wimbledon matches are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
