Dave Kendall, the British television personality who created and hosted MTV's iconic alternative music show 120 Minutes, has died at the age of 68, his co-star Matt Pinfield announced on July 14, 2026. Pinfield, who later hosted the series, expressed his heartbreak on social media, calling Kendall a "rare gift" who gave a home to music that deserved to be heard.
Kendall's Legacy on MTV
Kendall hosted 120 Minutes from 1988 to 1992, introducing audiences to artists like Nirvana, Kate Bush, and The Ramones. The show premiered Nirvana's video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in 2001. MTV paid tribute, stating, "His impact on music, MTV, and generations of fans will not be forgotten."
Behind the Scenes
Kendall admitted he initially didn't plan to host, but was encouraged by peers. He told Consequence, "When a few people said, 'You should be hosting it,' I started to think about it. I was doing the research and writing the script, so why shouldn't I get the credit?" He described the show as a distribution channel for organic musical produce, noting that mainstream US radio was not open to new ideas at the time.
After Kendall left in 1992, Lewis Largent took over until 1995, followed by Pinfield from 1995 to 1999 and again from 2011 to 2013. Pinfield's tribute emphasized Kendall's authentic connection with fans and respect for artists.
