BBC pundit Micah Richards has shared the tragic news that his father, Lincoln, passed away unexpectedly before he went on air for England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday. The former Manchester City star revealed the heartbreaking news in an Instagram post after the match, in which Thomas Tuchel's side were eliminated following a 2-1 defeat in Atlanta.
Richards pays heartfelt tribute to his father
Posting a tribute on social media, Richards said: "Not long before going on air today, I received the awful news that my father Lincoln had passed away. His death was unexpected, and he has left us all too soon." He described his father as his greatest fan, noting that Lincoln barely missed a game throughout his life and was the proudest parent during his professional career.
Richards added: "It was so rare for him to not be by my side. I know how much watching England World Cup games means to everyone at home, and how the experience bonds families together across the generations, like nothing else. I know, particularly as a proud old-school Yorkshireman, dad would’ve wanted the show to go on this evening. And so it did."
England's World Cup exit
England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, took an early lead in the semi-final but were unable to hold on as Argentina fought back to win 2-1. The defeat ended England's hopes of reaching the final, with Argentina advancing to the title match. Richards, a pundit for BBC Sport, remained professional despite the personal tragedy, fulfilling his on-air duties as the match unfolded.
In his tribute, Richards concluded: "Thinking of my siblings and all my wider family today as we remember my father Lincoln, my hero and inspiration."
