Melanie Chisholm, better known as Mel C from the iconic Spice Girls, has opened up about the heartfelt strategy that allows her to maintain a strong relationship with her Australian model boyfriend, Chris Dingwall, despite her demanding global touring commitments. The 52-year-old singer, in a candid interview with Stellar magazine this week, explained that her partner's flexible career as a screenwriter enables him to join her on the road, transforming her work-life balance.
Blending Work and Personal Life
Mel C revealed that meeting Chris in 2024, after connecting on the exclusive celebrity dating app Raya, prompted a significant shift in her approach. "Rather than separating work and life, I enjoy them both together, which has been a big shift. I think that really happened after I met my partner, Chris," she shared. "He's able to travel with me a lot. He's a screenwriter so he can work from anywhere, and that usually means with me, which is good for me." This arrangement ensures they spend ample quality time together, with Mel adding, "It's so beautiful to be able to enjoy the life I have with the person I love."
Spice Girls Reunion Hopes
In the same interview, Mel C addressed persistent rumours of a Spice Girls reunion tour, confirming she remains in constant contact with her former bandmates. "It’s something I'd love to do... something I hope will happen at some point," she expressed. "We're so precious about this beautiful thing we created that sometimes what holds us back from doing something is that we don’t want to do the wrong thing." Reflecting on their 2019 stadium shows in the UK, which Victoria Beckham missed, Mel noted, "They were magical, but sadly Victoria Beckham wasn’t with us for those. She really missed out and I keep telling her, 'You have to experience that for yourself'. So, we will continue to talk... fingers crossed at some point there will be something beautiful that can celebrate the Spice Girls."
Upcoming Projects and Personal Reflections
Mel C is set to perform across Australia in November to promote her upcoming studio album, Sweat, scheduled for release on May 1. Beyond her career, she hinted at future personal milestones with Chris, including the possibility of marriage. In a January interview with The Times, she reflected, "It's something I didn't think would be part of my story, but I'm so happy with Chris. Maybe it is something that will be in my life."
Past Struggles with Mental Health
Mel C also spoke honestly about the profound loneliness and mental health challenges she faced during the Spice Girls' split in the late 1990s. Under intense public scrutiny, she developed a binge-eating disorder and neglected her personal life, reaching a breaking point by the turn of the millennium. "I'd started having a binge-eating disorder, but I didn't understand it," she admitted. Seeking professional help led to diagnoses of clinical depression and disordered eating, marking a crucial turning point in her recovery journey.
On the family front, Mel shares a daughter, Scarlett, with property developer Thomas Starr, her partner of two decades before their split in 2021. Prior to that, she was in a seven-year relationship with her former manager, Joe Marshall, which ended in 2015. Her current relationship with Chris Dingwall represents a new chapter of balance and happiness, as she continues to navigate the demands of fame and personal fulfillment.
