Mel C, known as Sporty Spice, has spoken about the enduring legacy of the Spice Girls' Girl Power motto as the group marks the 30th anniversary of their debut single Wannabe. Speaking to the Mirror at the Silver Clef awards on Thursday night, the 52-year-old singer reflected on the progress of gender equality.
"I just think we'll never be equal. Hopefully, we will get there one day. But there's just such a long way to go. You know, just the way our society is built," Mel said. However, she expressed optimism about the next generation, adding: "I think girls are incredible now. My daughter's generation are so much more outspoken than I think I ever was."
Spice Girls' Bond and LGBTQ+ Support
The group, also consisting of Melanie Brown, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, and Geri Horner, has maintained a strong bond over the decades. Mel highlighted their inclusive fanbase: "And you know, women rule. We're so inclusive, and we [the Spice Girls] have such a huge following in the LGBTQ+ community as well. It's all about the girls and the gays, isn't it?"
30th Anniversary of Wannabe
Wannabe, released 30 years ago, introduced the world to Posh, Baby, Sporty, Scary, and Ginger Spice. When asked about her favorite Spice Girl, Mel laughed: "That's dodgy, that is! I wouldn’t want to choose. I'd like to choose a different one on a different day." She added: "I'm probably closest to Emma [out of] all of the girls. I love my Baby Spice. I saw her yesterday … Emma yesterday, Victoria today because she's dressed me."
Recognition at Silver Clef Awards
At the ceremony, Mel rubbed shoulders with Lily Allen, John Bishop, and Jessie J. She received the Global Impact award for her work in music and beyond. "I’m having such a great year," she said. "I feel here tonight, especially with yesterday being the anniversary of Wannabe. 30 years - that is very much a celebration of the Spice Girls, as well. If it wasn't for being part of the band, I wouldn't have a solo career and be an international artist. I feel very proud, I'm just having a ball."
